Intermittent fasting is an ancient Ayurvedic practice referred to as Earlier, lighter dinner, one of the recommended habits. With this habit, we suggest eating dinner by 6:00 p.m. and abstaining from food again until 7 a.m., around a 13-hour fasting time period. During this phase, the body begins to go through a process called autophagy. The word autophagy comes from two Greek words; auto meaning self and phagy meaning eat. Basically saying, it is a way for the body to naturally recycle damaged cells, proteins, and toxins. In 2016 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Japan’s Dr. Yoshinon Ohsumi for his discoveries of the underlying mechanisms of a physiological process of autophagy. This process happens when we reduce caloric intake. His study showed that caloric restriction could essentially rejuvenate and detoxify the body through the increase of nitric oxide. Benefits of Intermittent Fasting: • Stomach contracts (weight loss); • Increase metabolism; • Builds lean muscle tissue; • Decreases inflammation in the body; • Better sleep; • Reduction in blood sugar levels; • Improved cholesterol levels; • Increased energy; • Improvements in mood. Let's Do This! Let's re-engineer our body's natural healing capacity.
